Study in Kenya

Higher education begins after school or another qualifying route. In Kenya, it includes university study as well as college, technical, teacher, health, professional, and other advanced training. Universities commonly offer degree programmes and may also provide diplomas, postgraduate study, and research opportunities. Other institutions can specialise in technical, vocational, professional, or career-focused qualifications. Certificate, diploma, and degree routes differ in depth, entry requirements, duration, and purpose. Some learners progress from one qualification level to another, but progression depends on the programme and institution. Study can be full-time, part-time, in person, online, or blended. Availability varies, and practical programmes may still require workshops, laboratories, teaching practice, clinical work, or industrial attachment. Admission usually involves proof of identity, previous qualifications, and evidence that the applicant meets programme requirements. Some fields may require additional selection, professional conditions, or practical preparation. Costs extend beyond tuition. A student may need housing, food, transport, books, equipment, internet access, fieldwork, examination expenses, or support during unpaid practical placements. Recognition matters because a real institution can still offer a programme that does not meet the needs of a particular profession. Students should check both the institution and the specific programme, especially for regulated careers. Higher education can build knowledge, independence, professional networks, and access to some occupations. It cannot guarantee employment, and its value depends partly on learning quality, practical experience, communication skills, and informed career choices.
