Apprenticeship in Kenya

An apprenticeship teaches an occupation mainly through practical work. A learner watches experienced workers, practises real tasks, and gradually takes on more responsibility. In Kenya, vocational preparation is often connected to technical and vocational education and training, commonly called TVET. Training can be offered by technical institutes, vocational training centres, employers, or experienced workers in the informal economy. Formal apprenticeships usually have an agreed training structure. The learner may have a contract, a supervisor, defined duties, and classroom instruction alongside workplace practice. Industrial attachment is a related Kenyan term. It usually means a supervised period of workplace experience that forms part of a course, rather than a complete apprenticeship by itself. Informal apprenticeships are common in practical trades and small businesses. A learner may train under a craft worker in areas such as mechanics, construction, tailoring, hairdressing, metalwork, or food production. A strong programme teaches both technical and general workplace skills. These include safety, communication, punctuality, customer care, record keeping, and responsible use of tools. Completion evidence can include a certificate, an assessment result, a work record, or a reference from the trainer. Recognition is clearer when the training and assessment are linked to an established institution or qualification system. Apprenticeships can make entry into work easier and help learners build useful contacts. Their limits include uneven training quality, low or uncertain pay, weak supervision, and qualifications that some employers may not recognise.
