An employee works for another business under a contract of service or apprenticeship. The arrangement can be written or oral and can be express or implied; the reviewed official sources do not establish a general requirement for a written employment contract. Keep the offer, payslips, rosters, C7 forms and NIS and NHT records so that the agreed work and payments can be checked later. Self-employed work is treated separately. Job seekers can use LMIS and ELE without charge to post and edit a CV, search and apply for vacancies, receive career counselling and obtain help with CVs, interviews and job-search methods. Access is available through the Kingston Labour Exchange Centre, MLSS parish offices across Jamaica and Jamaica Library Service branches. Typical access documents include two recommendation letters, one from the last employer and one from a justice of the peace, police superintendent or pastor, together with an NIS card, TRN, CV and certificates. The service can also refer users to H.E.A.R.T./NTA training where appropriate. Private employment agencies must be licensed or registered by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. Candidate registration may cost up to J$2,500 for 12 months, and a local placement fee may not exceed one third of the first week's pay. The current MLSS approved list should be checked before paying an agency because the list can change. Jamaican nationals do not need a Work Permit for employment. A non-Jamaican national without diplomatic status generally needs a Work Permit or exemption before starting gainful employment. The application normally proceeds through a prospective employer, sponsor, contractor or legal representative, and the rule also covers voluntary, commercial, business, professional, charitable, entertainment and sports work. A pending application does not authorize work. CARICOM skilled persons may use a CARICOM Skills Certificate and verification process. A spouse of a Jamaican may apply for a Marriage Exemption Certificate; the published processing fee is J$17,250, and a complete application for that certificate takes about 10 business days. A permit lasts according to its approval letter. The national minimum wage in force from 1 July 2026 is J$17,000 for a 40-hour week, J$425 per hour for standard work, J$637.50 per hour for work exceeding 40 hours in a week and J$850 per hour on a rest day or public holiday. These amounts are a wage floor, not a ceiling, and an applicable sector or occupation may have additional requirements. Employees aged 18 to 70 in insurable employment register for the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), a contributory social-security system. Subject to the relevant contribution conditions, NIS coverage includes employment injury, invalidity, maternity, retirement and survivor or death benefits. Check the NIS remittance record each year. Employees who are at least 18, below 65 and gainfully occupied at not less than the minimum wage generally fall within National Housing Trust (NHT) employee coverage. The employee contributes 2% of gross salary and the employer contributes 3%; the monthly payment is made through Tax Administration Jamaica and is due by the 14th of the following month. NHT Online or the employer's contribution record can be used for checks. NHT support can include housing loans or grants, while a refund may become available after eight years and clearance or a tax-compliance certificate may be relevant. When an employer does not pay wages or does not meet a statutory obligation, the MLSS Pay and Conditions of Employment Branch (PCEB) can provide advice, manage complaints, investigate or inspect, mediate and, where appropriate, refer a case to court. Detailed labour-law rights and termination rules belong to the separate labour-law area. On a job change, update the NHT employment status, check the new employer's records and preserve the C7, NIS and NHT history. NIS claims after injury, invalidity, retirement or death depend on the applicable contribution conditions.
