Safety in Ivory Coast

Safety focuses on disasters and crime.

Disasters

Disasters in Ivory Coast include urban and rural flooding, landslides, building or wall collapses, lightning, drought, coastal erosion, marine flooding, technological accidents and transport accidents. Flooding is the most prominent modeled risk, especially in Abidjan and other southern and coastal areas, while drought affects much of the north and center. Protection civile authorities coordinate warnings, rescue, evacuation and assistance, but public alert and shelter information remains locally organized and incomplete.

Crime

Crime in Ivory Coast varies sharply by neighbourhood, time, transport choice and proximity to national borders. Common risks include pickpocketing, bag-snatching, burglary, assault, armed robbery, carjacking, home invasion and fraud. Abidjan has increased violent-crime risks at night, while northern border areas face terrorism and kidnapping risks.
