State in Israel

The official Hebrew name of the country is Medinat Yisrael, meaning the State of Israel. It is a parliamentary state whose public powers are divided among elected institutions, executive authorities, and courts. The Knesset is the national legislature. It passes laws, approves the state budget, supervises the government, and represents political choices made through national elections. The government is the executive authority. The prime minister and ministers direct national policy, while ministries and public agencies carry out laws and provide services. The president serves as head of state. The office represents continuity and performs defined public and constitutional duties, but everyday government policy is led by the prime minister and cabinet. Israel's judiciary resolves disputes, conducts criminal and civil proceedings, and examines administrative decisions under the law. Different courts handle different kinds of cases, and specialized tribunals also exist for certain matters. Israel does not have one consolidated constitutional document. Basic Laws establish central parts of the institutional framework, and ordinary laws, regulations, and court decisions add further rules. National ministries manage areas such as taxation, social services, health policy, education policy, transport, immigration, and internal administration. A person usually deals with the ministry or agency responsible for the specific service rather than with the state as one single office. Municipalities and local councils handle many place-based services, including sanitation, local planning, public spaces, and community facilities. Their responsibilities and budgets are separate from many national functions, although cooperation with ministries is common. Citizenship, residency, and personal status can affect access to procedures, documents, voting, and benefits. Israel also has complex territorial and jurisdictional arrangements, so the responsible authority may depend on a person's location and legal status. State institutions provide common rules and public services, but their powers are limited by law, budgets, administrative procedures, and review mechanisms. People can often challenge a decision through an internal objection, an appeal, an ombudsman, or a court, depending on the matter.
