The Health Service Executive, commonly called the HSE, manages and delivers much of the public health service in Ireland. Private providers also operate, so patients may meet public, private, or mixed arrangements. A general practitioner is usually called a GP. GPs assess common health problems, manage ongoing conditions, provide preventive care, and refer patients when specialist assessment is needed. A pharmacy supplies medicines and can advise on many minor health concerns. Pharmacists cannot replace emergency or full medical assessment when symptoms are serious. Hospitals provide emergency, inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, and specialist services. Emergency departments are intended for urgent or serious problems, while non-emergency care often starts with a GP, pharmacist, or another appropriate community service. Eligibility, charges, waiting pathways, and access can differ according to the service and the person's circumstances. Do not assume that every service is automatically free or that private payment always gives the same pathway. Prescriptions, referrals, test results, and appointments belong to connected but separate processes. Patients should know who is responsible for the next step and whom to contact if no information arrives. Mental health is part of health care. Support can begin through a GP, an appropriate community service, or urgent emergency help when someone may be in immediate danger. Good preparation improves care. Bring identification when requested, a medicine list, allergy information, relevant records, and a clear description of symptoms and concerns.
