Upskilling in Iceland

Upskilling in Iceland covers formal, non-formal and informal learning that updates, deepens or broadens skills or supports a career change. The local term framhaldsfræðsla refers to adult education outside the upper-secondary and university systems, while símenntun is the broader lifelong-learning term. Provision is established but decentralized across 14 regional lifelong-learning centres, employers, unions, universities and other recognized providers. Courses may be short or part-time and can lead to certificates, documented competences or, in some cases, upper-secondary credits, but they do not automatically equal a degree.

Tip

Choose the learning path by the result you need, your current work status and the experience you can already document. Compare the provider, schedule, total cost, funding conditions and expected proof of learning before enrolling. Treat certificates, upper-secondary credits, university credits, degree admission and professional licensing as separate outcomes, because one does not automatically provide the others.
