Study in Hungary

Higher education is called felsőoktatás in Hungary, and a university is an egyetem. Institutions offer academic, professional, and practice-oriented programs in Hungarian and, in some cases, other languages. The common first degree is alapképzés, corresponding to bachelor’s study. It may be followed by mesterképzés, or master’s study, and then doctoral education for advanced research. Some professions use osztatlan képzés, a long integrated program rather than a separate bachelor’s and master’s sequence. Shorter higher education vocational programs may also provide specialized preparation and possible links to later degree study. Admission is based on the program’s published requirements and the applicant’s educational background. School-leaving results, required subjects, examinations, language proof, portfolios, interviews, or other evidence may matter depending on the field. Students usually learn through lectures, seminars, laboratory or practical sessions, independent reading, projects, and examinations. Many programs use credits to record completed academic work and progression. Hungarian is the main language of much higher education, while foreign-language programs are also available. Students should check both the official teaching language and the language needed for placements, administration, or professional practice. Funding arrangements differ between publicly supported and fee-paying study places. Students should plan for study costs as well as housing, transport, food, materials, insurance, and daily living. A Hungarian degree can support employment or further study, but recognition is purpose-specific. Regulated professions and use of the degree abroad may require additional recognition, registration, language ability, or practical training. Before applying, candidates should verify the exact degree awarded, curriculum, admission route, language, practical components, and recognition needs. Foreign certificates may require translation, authentication, or formal assessment.
