Employment in Hungary usually means munkaviszony, a legal relationship in which a worker performs duties under an employer's organization and direction. It differs from genuine self-employment because the employee is part of the employer's working structure. The relationship is based on a written employment contract called a munkaszerződés. Its essential terms include the parties, the position, and the basic wage. The contract may be open-ended or fixed-term. It may also contain a trial period, during which the relationship can generally be ended more simply under the applicable rules. Before work begins, the employer handles the required registration and payroll setup. The employee usually provides identification, tax, social security, payment, and qualification information where relevant. The employer assigns work and must respect employment, equality, data-protection, and safety duties. The employee must appear fit for work, follow lawful instructions, and protect legitimate workplace interests. Working schedules, leave, sickness-related absence, and other time away from work must be communicated through the employer's procedures. Documents are especially important when an absence affects pay or benefits. Employment conditions can also be influenced by workplace policies and a collective agreement. These documents cannot simply remove protections that mandatory rules provide. Employment may end through mutual agreement, notice, immediate action on a serious ground, or expiry of a fixed term.
