Living in Guinea

Guinea lies on West Africa’s Atlantic coast and has around 12.4 million people. The country stretches from flat coastal plains through wooded hills to the Fouta-Djalon highlands and the savannas in the east. The coast has a hot, humid climate with a pronounced rainy season, while inland areas are drier and nights can be cooler at higher elevations. In Conakry, many people live in densely built-up neighborhoods and get around by taxi, minibus, or motorcycle. Outside the capital, agriculture, trade, and mining shape daily life; villages are often far apart. Families, markets, and community celebrations are important meeting places, although living conditions vary significantly by region.
