History in Guinea

Guinea’s history includes ancient regional trade, powerful West African states, French colonial rule and independence in 1958. Political life after independence was shaped by Ahmed Sékou Touré’s socialist government, military rule under Lansana Conté, electoral transitions and the 2021 military takeover. Oral traditions, archaeology, Arabic manuscripts and colonial records provide different evidence about Guinea’s past.

Tip

Use Guinea’s history as a regional and source-critical framework rather than as one uninterrupted national story. When studying or explaining a period, identify the region, the political authority, the source type and whose experience is represented.
