Shopping in Grenada

Formal shops and informal market sellers operate alongside each other in Grenada. St. George's Market and the Grand Anse Craft & Spice Market sell produce, spices, crafts and other local goods. Supermarkets, neighbourhood shops, boutiques and malls such as Spiceland Mall and Excel Plaza offer imported packaged goods, clothing, household supplies and electronics. GPC Global, operated through Grenada Postal Corporation, supports overseas shopping and forwarding. Carriacou and Petite Martinique have their own retail arrangements, and availability outside the main commercial centres can be narrower. Selected groceries and household essentials appear on the Consumer Affairs Office price-control list, including some rice, flour, sugar, milk, meat, fish, canned goods, cooking oil and toilet paper. The list covers only specified goods, and its current items and permitted margins should be checked before relying on a price. Cleaning products, sanitary goods and small appliances are commonly imported. Clothing and technology are also largely import-based; check fit, condition, warranty and service arrangements before paying because these vary by supplier. Online shopping is fragmented rather than centered on one national marketplace. Local sellers may accept orders through social platforms or other direct channels. Foreign-platform purchases can be forwarded through GPC Global: registration is made at a GPC office, followed by a United States delivery address or account number, invoice upload and air or ocean forwarding. GPC's published charges include EC$50 registration, EC$9.75 per pound by air, EC$5.50 per pound by ocean, EC$20 documentation and 1.5% insurance where selected. Published local delivery charges are EC$10 to St. George, EC$15 to St. David, EC$25 to St. Mark or St. Patrick and EC$20 to St. John or St. Andrew. Rates can change. Ocean shipments are generally scheduled about once each Monday, with published cut-offs on Thursday at 14:00 Eastern Standard Time for air shipments and Wednesday at 12:00 for repacking. GPC Now Delivery offers flat-size bags at EC$5, EC$10, EC$15 or EC$25, but excludes cash, perishables, livestock, hazardous or biohazardous goods, unsecured fragile goods, illicit substances and food. A buyer who imports goods may clear them personally or use an authorised agent. Grenada Customs and Excise uses ASYCUDA World for electronic declarations, while a non-commercial Simplified Administrative Document, or SAD, can apply to some personal shipments. Customs may require identification, a waybill or bill of lading, invoices, package count and type, weight, freight, the customs value in Eastern Caribbean dollars, a tariff number, insurance details and any required import licence, permit or certificate. Customs may examine or revalue a shipment. The buyer must pay assessed duties, taxes and port charges before release and keep the receipt, release order and exit pass. Restricted or prohibited goods and false declarations can lead to penalties. Personal cheques are not accepted unless the Comptroller authorises them. Postal and EMS goods are cleared by Customs before release; EMS normally targets delivery within five to seven working days, with Customs charges separate from postal charges. The domestic currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, written as EC$. Shops may accept cash, debit or credit cards and point-of-sale payments. Online checkout and card acceptance depend on the seller. Cash remains dominant for recurring payments in Eastern Caribbean Central Bank survey data, although that does not establish a shopping-specific national percentage. Keep a receipt or other sales record for every significant purchase. The Consumer Protection Act 2018 requires suppliers to provide pre-payment information in English, including origin, care instructions, terms, components, hazards, use, weight, size and assembly or installation details where relevant. Prices must be displayed, and when concurrent prices are shown the lowest displayed price is payable. Misleading advertising, false trade descriptions and unfair transactions are prohibited. If no express warranty applies, an implied six-month warranty covers parts and labour. Depending on the breach and circumstances, remedies can include repair, replacement, a partial or full refund or damages. Materially defective goods may be returned within a reasonable time under the statutory conditions without a restocking fee. A general right to return an accurately described, satisfactory item simply because the buyer changed their mind has not been established. The Consumer Affairs Office, within the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Labour & Consumer Affairs, handles complaints about defective products, misleading advertising, poor service and billing disputes. A complaint should include the receipt, warranty or other records, valid identification and the defective item or photographs. The office is in the New NIS Building in St. George's and publishes opening hours of Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00. Grenada's waste rules prohibit the import, sale or use of specified single-use plastic products, including plastic bags, Styrofoam food containers and straws. The Grenada Solid Waste Management Authority oversees waste collection and landfill governance. Recycling infrastructure remains limited, so reusable bags, products with less packaging and correct disposal reduce practical waste problems. The Recycle OECS Model Demonstration Project provides a recycling-related initiative, but it does not make every material locally recyclable.
