Spanish is the main language of administration, education and communication between different language communities in Equatorial Guinea. Most schools teach in Spanish, although a family language is not automatically used as the language of instruction. French and Portuguese also have constitutional official status under the 2010 constitutional law, but that status does not create a nationwide course or examination system. French has practical value for CEMAC cooperation, regional mobility, study and work. Portuguese is relevant to the CPLP and Afro-Iberian cooperation, while Fá d’Ambô is a Portuguese-based Creole spoken especially on Annobón. English is relevant to business, tourism and international contacts, but current nationwide course and examination structures are not reliably documented. Spanish courses are offered through CCEM in Malabo and CCEB in Bata. These centres provide Spanish as a foreign language at several levels, and both cities have accredited DELE examination centres; course attendance alone does not provide automatic admission to study or work. The University of Equatorial Guinea offers French and Spanish programmes, although current fees and calendars should be checked directly with the university. IFGE in Malabo offers French courses for children and adults, general and professional purposes, individual or group study, and preparation for DELF, DALF and TCF examinations. Published IFGE prices range from 70,000 to 200,000 FCFA for group courses lasting 40 or 80 hours over three months, while individual lessons cost 12,000 FCFA per hour; business courses are quoted separately. French examinations at IFGE include DELF Prim, DELF Junior, DELF for adults, DALF and TCF. DELF and DALF certificates are valid for life, whereas a TCF result is generally valid for two years; examination dates, fees and registration conditions must be confirmed before payment. Indigenous languages are recognized as part of national culture, but no nationwide standard curriculum, certificate or examination structure for Fang, Bubi, Ndowe, Bisio or Fá d’Ambô is publicly documented. Digital Spanish learning is possible through Instituto Cervantes AVE Global from A1 to C1, but local FCFA prices and tutor access depend on the centre. Outside Malabo and Bata, current course providers, examination locations, prices and reliable internet access are not sufficiently documented to assume equal availability.
Languages in Equatorial Guinea
Equatorial Guinea has Spanish, French and Portuguese as constitutional official languages, while Spanish dominates administration and schooling. Fang, Bubi, Ndowe, Bisio and Fá d’Ambô remain important family, community and identity languages. Formal learning opportunities are concentrated in Malabo and Bata, with Spanish and French better established than Portuguese, English or indigenous-language courses.
Tip
Choose Spanish first when your immediate needs concern school, administration or everyday communication in Equatorial Guinea. Choose French when regional, academic or professional mobility in CEMAC or francophone settings matters, and treat Portuguese, English and indigenous-language learning as purpose-specific options whose local availability requires separate confirmation. Do not pay for a course or examination until the current centre, date, fee, registration rule and intended certificate use are confirmed.
