The Federal Training Assistance Act (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz, BAföG) generally provides support as a grant. For school-based vocational training, both the school attended and the applicant’s personal circumstances must meet the eligibility requirements; not every school-based training program qualifies. The usual support for school-based training does not create a loan debt whose repayment needs to be capped. Loans under BAföG mainly apply to certain programs at advanced technical colleges, academies, and higher education institutions. A university degree is not part of initial vocational training in this topic area. For in-company training, vocational training assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) may be more relevant; it is not a BAföG repayment. Check your notice to see whether the support was approved as a grant or a loan, and clarify the type of support with the responsible office before expecting to repay anything.
Maximum repayment amount before vocational training in Germany
For student BAföG during school-based vocational training, repayment is generally not required, so there is no maximum amount to repay later. Eligibility depends on the type of school and personal circumstances. In-company training is generally supported through other assistance, such as vocational training assistance.
Tip
Plan for repayment only if your notice actually identifies the support as a loan. For school-based vocational training, the first question is whether that specific type of school is eligible at all; in-company training follows a different support route.
