BAföG stands for the Federal Training Assistance Act (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz). Whether school-based vocational training is supported depends, among other things, on the type of school and personal circumstances. Dual in-company training is normally not supported through BAföG; vocational training assistance may be available instead. The training assistance office transfers approved amounts electronically each month in advance. The amount depends on the support awarded. For a first application or after an interruption in training, the law provides for provisional payments if processing takes longer: if the required findings are not made within six calendar weeks or payment is not made within ten calendar weeks, payments of up to four fifths of the expected need are provided for four months. These payments are subject to recovery, so the final amount may differ. Apply as early as possible and submit the requested evidence in full. Do not plan rent and other fixed expenses around a payment date the office has not confirmed. Check the approval notice and report changes that may affect the amount of support.
Monthly payments before vocational training in Germany
Student BAföG is transferred to a bank account monthly in advance. The first payment may be delayed if the office does not process the application in time; special advance payment rules apply to a first application.
Tip
Do not plan ongoing expenses around a BAföG payment while the notice and payment are still pending. A statutory provisional payment may apply to a first application, but it is limited and may be reclaimed.
