Documents before vocational training in Germany

For a BAföG application for school-based vocational training, you need evidence about your training, income and assets and, depending on the case, your parents’ or spouse’s finances. The required forms and documents depend on the type of school and your circumstances.

Tip

First check whether your type of school qualifies for BAföG; that determines whether an application is relevant. Apply in the month from which you need support if possible, then provide any missing evidence promptly.

Training Institution

For a BAföG application, the training institution must belong to an eligible type of school. The school usually confirms the course and its start date; having a place at a school alone does not establish eligibility for funding.

Proof of Income

For a BAföG application to fund school-based vocational training, proof of income is required if the responsible office checks the income of a parent, spouse, or trainee. The documents needed depend on the person’s circumstances and the relevant period.

Assets

For an application for education funding under the Federal Training Assistance Act (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz, BAföG), the assets held on the application date are assessed. Up to €15,000 is disregarded for applicants under 30; from the 30th birthday, the amount is €45,000. An additional €2,300 applies for each spouse or life partner and each child.
