Settling in Germany

Settling in usually begins with secure accommodation and an overview of the new place of residence. Further tasks can then be organized sensibly. Anyone moving into a home generally has to register with the responsible local registration authority (Meldebehörde). Depending on the location, this authority may be called a citizens’ office, citizens’ service office or residents’ registration office. Many procedures require personal documents. These may include a passport, residence documents, birth certificates, rental documents and proof of education or employment. A personal bank account, an accessible telephone number and a labeled mailbox make everyday life easier. Authorities, insurers and companies often send important information in writing. Different offices are responsible depending on the individual situation. The foreigners authority, employment agency, Jobcenter, family benefits office, school and health insurer each have their own responsibilities. Knowledge of German helps with shopping, appointments and communication. Language courses, schools, clubs and community activities can support the transition. Rules and services vary in some respects between federal states and municipalities. The locally responsible office is therefore more important than general information from another place. Settling in takes time and does not always follow a straight path. Small completed steps create security and make the next step easier.
