Common pets in Germany include dogs, cats, small animals, birds and fish. Each kind of animal has its own needs for space, exercise, food, stimulation and social contact. Anyone who takes in an animal becomes responsible for it for its whole life. This includes daily care, planning for holidays and arranging care if the person who usually looks after it becomes ill. Veterinary practices provide examinations, treatment, vaccination advice and other preventive care. Veterinary services can involve substantial costs and should be budgeted for. Dogs are often subject to special municipal rules. These may include registration, fees, leash rules and requirements for particular situations. In rented homes, it is important to clarify which animals may be kept. The rental agreement, type and number of animals, and possible disturbances may all matter. Pet owners must protect neighbours, traffic, nature and other animals. Noise, soiling, uncontrolled chasing and dangerous situations should be avoided. Animal shelters take in animals and find them suitable new homes. Adoption can be a good option, but it should be prepared for just as carefully as any other pet purchase. Animals are not suitable as spur-of-the-moment gifts. Time, costs, housing and long-term responsibility should all be considered honestly before taking one in.
