German is the most important everyday language, but Germany is linguistically diverse. Dialects, minority languages, and many languages brought by migrants are also part of everyday life. The formal address (Sie) sounds more formal and creates distance. The informal address (Du) is used among friends, in families, and in many groups, but it should not be assumed everywhere without being invited. Direct statements are often meant factually and are not automatically unfriendly. At the same time, tone of voice, respect, and appropriate wording remain important. Appointments and commitments are often understood as binding. Anyone who is running late or cannot keep an agreement should let others know as early as possible. Government offices and companies often communicate through letters, forms, and emails. Reference numbers, customer numbers, or other identifiers are important for this purpose. In conversations, it helps to speak one at a time and ask specific questions. A brief summary at the end can prevent misunderstandings. Personal data, photos, and other people’s messages should not be shared without consent. This also applies to group chats and social media. Good communication does not mean perfect language. Asking questions, repeating information, and using simple sentences are more helpful than silently guessing.
Communication in Germany
Communication in Germany is often clear, factual, and strongly dependent on the situation. People often speak differently in government offices or at work than they do with friends. Politeness, reliability, and clear agreements are helpful in almost every area.
