Shopping in Germany

Food is often bought at a supermarket or discount store. Discount stores usually offer a smaller selection, while large supermarkets often carry more brands and speciality products. Bakeries, butchers, drugstores, pharmacies and other specialist shops sell specific groups of goods. Weekly markets often offer fresh food and direct contact with the individual stalls. Prices are displayed on the shelf or on the goods. A unit price per weight or quantity helps compare differently sized packages. At the checkout, payment can be made in cash, by card or, depending on the shop, in other ways. The receipt serves as proof of purchase and should be kept for important goods. A deposit (Pfand) is charged on many drink containers. Suitable empty containers can be returned, and the deposit amount is credited or paid out. Carrier bags are often not free. Many people therefore bring their own bags, baskets or shopping bags. Opening hours depend on the place and the shop. Many ordinary shops remain closed on Sundays, while some outlets have specific exceptions. Online purchases involve different procedures from shopping in a store. Before buying, check the price, shipping, returns, payment method and the seller’s trustworthiness.
