Pets in Gambia

The formal system for companion animals in The Gambia is fragmented. The Department of Livestock Services, within the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security, provides veterinary services, disease control, laboratory diagnosis and some outreach. The Abuko Veterinary Clinic and the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Abuko are named public facilities. Private veterinary clinics and medicine suppliers provide much of the routine care, but access and availability vary by location. Publicly reviewed agriculture data identifies six suppliers in the Kanifing Municipal Council area, with only two reporting outlets in other regions, so owners outside the urban area may need to plan travel and confirm supplies in advance. Routine care can include rabies vaccination, locally appropriate core vaccines, internal and external parasite treatment, veterinary examinations, safe containment and, where appropriate, sterilisation. Embassy guidance also refers to freedom from external parasites and contagious diseases, transmission of the certificate to the Department of Livestock Services in Abuko by fax, and presentation of the pet at the Abuko Veterinary Clinic within 72 hours after arrival. Permit, quarantine, fee, airline and entry-point requirements are not consistently published, so the Department of Livestock Services, the carrier and the arrival point should confirm the current requirements before travel.
