School education in The Gambia follows a 3-6-3-3 structure from Early Childhood Development and nursery through senior secondary school. Lower Basic Education covers Grades 1-6, Upper Basic Education covers Grades 7-9, and Senior Secondary Education covers Grades 10-12. The nine-year basic cycle is defined as free, compulsory and available to all. The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, commonly called MoBSE, oversees the system, while government, grant-aided, private conventional and Madrassa providers operate schools under different arrangements. Apprenticeship combines several forms of occupational learning. Traditional workshop apprenticeships teach practical trades under a master-craftsman, while formal technical and vocational programmes and employer-based training provide more structured alternatives. Accredited institutions can offer nationally assessed qualifications. Fees, access, training quality and recognition differ between traditional, formal and employer-based options. English is The Gambia’s official language and the main language of administration, schooling, examinations and formal work. Mandinka, Pulaar or Fula, Wollof or Wolof, Jola and Sarahule are major national languages, alongside languages such as Serere, Manjago, Creole or Aku, Bambara, Arabic and French. A learning path may therefore use a community language for family and local services while relying on English for formal education and documents. Tertiary study takes place at universities, colleges and equivalent institutions. Programmes may lead to degrees, postgraduate qualifications, diplomas, advanced diplomas or higher national diplomas. Admission requirements, accreditation, fees and progression options depend on the institution and programme. Upskilling includes organised or self-directed learning that updates, deepens or broadens skills after or alongside initial education and work. The Gambia does not have one unified continuing-education system, single portal or universal funding scheme for these options. Professional development, workplace training, adult and non-formal education, technical training, apprenticeships and informal trade learning can all serve this purpose, but their structure and recognition differ.
