Living in Eritrea

Eritrea lies on the Red Sea in northeastern Africa and has around 6.2 million people. The country stretches from the dry coastal plain across the central highlands to the western lowlands and the offshore islands. Accordingly, climate and landscape vary: the coast is hot and dry, the highlands generally milder, while rainy seasons differ from region to region. In Asmara, apartments, markets, schools, offices and small shops shape everyday life; many journeys are made on foot or by bus. In rural areas, people more often live in smaller settlements, work in agriculture, trade or crafts, and depend more heavily on local supplies. Families, neighbourhoods, music and shared meals play an important role in many places.
