A technical or vocational secondary qualification can lead to a technical occupation. Higher education institutions offer programs leading to Técnico, Profesor, Tecnólogo, Licenciado, Ingeniero, Arquitecto, Maestro, Doctor or Especialista qualifications. The Instituto Nacional de Capacitación y Formación Profesional (INCAF) provides training and competency certification that can be available without an academic degree and regardless of how the person gained the competence. Dual training, alternating study and work, internships and prior work experience are also used. Completing a higher education program normally requires the full study plan, the institution's rules, any required social service and at least 32 academic units at the institution awarding the qualification. MINEDUCYT handles incorporation and registration procedures for foreign academic qualifications, but academic recognition does not automatically authorize practice in a regulated profession. Health professions are supervised through the Consejo Superior de Salud Pública and professional boards, with temporary, provisional or permanent authorization depending on the profession and case. The Corte Suprema de Justicia authorizes lawyers and notaries; the procedure is free, includes personal swearing-in and can take up to nine months. Architecture, engineering, project design and construction require registration with the Ministerio de Vivienda, while electrical work uses four registration categories under the Dirección General de Energía, Hidrocarburos y Minas since 17 July 2026. Teachers use MINEDUCYT registration, NIP and escalafón procedures. Employment conditions follow the Código de Trabajo and the Ministerio de Trabajo y Previsión Social: ordinary daytime work is generally limited to 8 hours per day and 44 hours per week, night work to 7 hours per day and 39 hours per week, and hazardous or unhealthy work to shorter limits. Overtime carries a 100% surcharge and night work a 25% surcharge. After one year and at least 200 days worked, employees qualify for annual leave under the applicable rules. The aguinaldo, paid from 12 to 20 December, is 15 days for one to less than three years of service, 19 days for three to less than ten years and 21 days from ten years onward. The latest identified official minimum-wage tariff, effective 1 June 2025, sets monthly floors by sector rather than profession: USD 408.80 for commerce, services and industry; USD 402.32 for textile maquila; USD 305.23 for sugar and coffee processing; and USD 272.53 for coffee, agriculture, fishing and other agricultural activities. Professional salaries and self-employed fees vary by occupation, employer, experience and contract. Employers must maintain an occupational safety and health program and update it annually; workplaces with at least 15 employees require an occupational safety and health committee. Depending on employment status, formal work also involves social-security and pension contributions through the Salvadoran Social Security Institute and an AFP. INCAF certification and specialization, higher-education progression and, for teachers, NIP, escalafón, promotion examinations and pedagogical training can support career development, but a qualification does not guarantee employment. The Ministerio de Trabajo y Previsión Social's Programa Oportunidades offers free job-placement support.
Professions in El Salvador
Professions in El Salvador include technical trades, service occupations and regulated professional careers. People enter them through technical or vocational secondary education, higher education, competency-based training, dual arrangements, internships or work experience. Many occupations have no single national license, while health care, law, teaching, electrical work, architecture and engineering require specific registration or authorization.
Tip
Choose an entry route according to the work you want to perform, the proof of competence you can obtain and whether the occupation is regulated. Use competency training or supervised experience when a formal degree is unnecessary, but confirm authorization before accepting work in health care, law, teaching, electrical work, architecture or engineering. Compare the sector wage floor with the actual offer and check working time, overtime, leave, year-end payment, safety measures and social contributions before signing.
