Crime in El Salvador

El Salvador’s official 2025 security report recorded 82 homicides, a rate of 1.3 per 100,000 inhabitants, and a 51.50% decline in other monitored high-impact crime compared with 2024. Residual risks include robbery, armed assault, carjacking, sexual assault, extortion, kidnapping, petty theft, scams and card fraud. Risk increases after dark, on public transport, at transport hubs, in tourist areas and on border or remote roads.

Tip

Treat safety in El Salvador as a situational decision: adjust movement, transport and valuables when exposure rises after dark, on public transport, at transport hubs, in tourist areas or on remote roads. Use 911 for an active emergency, 123 for anonymous intelligence and ODAC or the FGR for a formal complaint; preserving evidence and reporting promptly usually matters more than trying to investigate the incident yourself.
