BTV combines classroom learning with practical training and usually lasts three years. It covers fields such as industry, agriculture, aquaculture, health, tourism, administration, software, logistics, electricity and mechanics. Public and private schools provide these programs, and access follows the admission rules of the school and program because no single national access list applies to every BTV course. Assessment follows the relevant curriculum through competency-based, modular or examination requirements. MEGATEC, the Modelo Educativo Gradual de Aprendizaje Técnico y Tecnológico, connects technical secondary education with higher technical training. An articulated BTV pathway commonly leads to a Técnico Superior qualification in about one additional year, while a non-articulated pathway commonly takes about two years. The exact program, campus, places and admission process depend on the department and institution. MEGATEC scholarship calls may require Salvadoran nationality, a MINEDUCYT-validated bachiller or equivalent qualification, admission or a preparatory course, and proof of financial need. Articulated applicants may also need to meet a grade requirement of at least 7.0 in each technical module or follow the relevant plan. INCAF is an autonomous public institute connected to the Ministry of Economy. It offers Formación Profesional through technical, professional, craft and language courses, either directly or through private providers. Courses may be in person, synchronous online or delivered through platforms, and their start date, duration, vacancies and format depend on the individual training action. INCAF serves workers, contributors, people seeking a first job and unemployed people; some cooperation programs also accept the general population. A general school-leaving qualification is not established as a requirement for every INCAF offer. INCAF can assess practical competence in a real or simulated workplace and issue a Certificación de Competencias Laborales. This certification can recognise skills acquired through formal education, work or other learning pathways and does not generally require an academic title. The evaluation measures performance against the relevant occupational standard. Learners normally provide attendance, performance evidence and identity or training documents required by the course or assessment. A Contrato de aprendizaje is a separate labour-law mechanism governed by Articles 61 to 70 of the Código de Trabajo. It only takes effect after authorisation by the Ministerio de Trabajo y Previsión Social (MTPS). The application is submitted through SIPROMA with the signed contract or application in PDF. The apprentice must be over 18, provide a DUI, and work with a company registered with the MTPS; the company representative also provides identification and assumes the contract duties. The research does not establish one payment or duration for all contracts, so those terms must be checked in the individual contract or program. Special programs can apply different conditions. El Salvador also permits dual training, alternation, internships and practical placements with companies, but the reviewed evidence does not show a uniform nationwide dual system or identical rules for every placement. BTV and MEGATEC usually have strong workshop or laboratory components, while INCAF follows labour-market demand and combines technical with transversal skills. State funding and statutory sources finance INCAF, but course fees cannot be stated as one national amount. MEGATEC scholarships may cover tuition, monthly charges or other fees, transport and food when the relevant call and eligibility rules provide for them. Availability should be checked by department, campus, provider and available places.
Apprenticeship in El Salvador
Apprenticeship and vocational education in El Salvador use several pathways rather than one nationwide dual system. Formal options include Bachillerato Técnico Vocacional (BTV) in technical secondary education and MEGATEC programs, while INCAF provides non-formal technical and occupational training. A Contrato de aprendizaje offers a separate regulated entry mechanism into workplace learning.
Tip
Choose the pathway according to the qualification and learning setting you need: BTV or MEGATEC for a structured technical education, INCAF for a targeted skills course or competence certification, and a Contrato de aprendizaje for an authorised workplace arrangement. Compare the exact program, provider, location, admission conditions, duration, costs and resulting document before committing. Do not assume that a practical placement has the same status, payment or protection as a formal training program.
