Safety in Congo

Safety focuses on disasters and crime.

Disasters

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, floods, heavy rainfall, erosion, landslides, droughts, storms, volcanoes, fires and technological accidents pose the greatest risks to people and infrastructure. The state disaster-protection system is formally established but operates unevenly across regions and is strained by conflict, displacement and weak infrastructure. Warnings, assistance and evacuations therefore depend heavily on the affected location and the local or humanitarian structures available there.

Crime

Crime in the Democratic Republic of the Congo ranges from theft, burglary, robbery and scams in urban centres to armed robbery, kidnapping, ambushes and sexual violence in several eastern, border and conflict-affected areas. Risk changes sharply by province, journey, time and local security conditions. Prevention includes discreet travel, trusted transport and current local information, while acute police contact is available through 112 where reachable.
