Language in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has French as its only official language and four national languages: Kikongo, Lingala, Kiswahili, and Tshiluba. More than 200 regional and local languages shape daily life, culture, and local communication. French dominates central administration, higher education, and many formal documents, while the national languages serve regionally as languages of wider communication, trade, and daily life.

Tip

Initially plan formal procedures in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in French and also clarify which regional or local language the specific office actually uses. Do not rely solely on the language area of a city or province when dealing with authorities, schools, or translations; confirm the available language version directly with the responsible institution.
