Insurance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Insurance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo covers contractually defined personal, property, liability and income risks; the National Social Security Fund (CNSS) also administers statutory social security. The private insurance market is supervised by the Insurance Regulatory and Control Authority (ARCA), while CNSS and ARCA have different responsibilities. In 2024, ARCA reported 51 licensed or authorized market participants and ten insurers; premiums amounted to USD 377.89 million. For certain vehicles, buildings, construction projects, transport operations and imported goods, the law requires insurance coverage.

Tip

First classify each risk in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a CNSS benefit, a private policy or legally required coverage. Take out private insurance only with a provider authorized by ARCA and compare exclusions, coverage limits, payment methods and claim deadlines in addition to the premium. For vehicles, construction projects, imports and transport operations, missing proof of insurance can directly cause liability or benefit problems.
