Art in Congo

Art in the Democratic Republic of Congo includes visual art, music, literature, film, theatre, dance, architecture, design, photography and digital practices. Formal schools, cultural centres, museums, galleries, festivals, residencies, community organisations and neighbourhood clubs work in parallel rather than through one national art service. Kinshasa has the densest formal infrastructure, while Lubumbashi is a major contemporary-art centre and access elsewhere is more uneven.

Tip

Treat the art sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo as a network of different entry points rather than as one application system. Choose the institution or programme according to your concrete aim, location and available time. Record fees, deadlines, permissions and selection conditions in writing because they vary and are not always published.
