History in North Korea

The history of North Korea covers the northern Korean Peninsula from prehistoric settlement through the present. It includes ancient states such as Gojoseon and Goguryeo, the Goryeo and Joseon periods, Japanese colonial rule, the division of Korea after 1945 and the Korean War. The 1953 armistice ended active fighting without a peace treaty, leaving the division and the Demilitarized Zone as continuing features of North Korea's history.

Tip

Treat the history of North Korea as a source-critical timeline rather than a single settled narrative. For a general account, work chronologically; for the division of Korea, the Korean War or political legitimacy, compare sources by origin and record disagreements. Separate evidence from interpretation, especially where archive access and field research are restricted.
