Nature in Czechia

The Czech word for nature is “příroda,” while “krajina” means landscape. In Czechia, nature is often a mixture of wild processes and land managed for forestry, farming, water, recreation, or settlement. Forests cover many hills and uplands and are important for wildlife, water retention, cooling, timber, and recreation. A forest may look wild while still being actively managed by an owner or forestry organisation. Rivers, streams, ponds, reservoirs, wetlands, and floodplains form connected water habitats. Czech fishpond landscapes are a distinctive human-shaped form of nature with roles in fish production, water management, scenery, and biodiversity. Open countryside includes fields, meadows, pastures, orchards, field edges, and small landscape features. These places can support wildlife, but intensive use and fragmented habitats may reduce their variety. Czechia protects valuable nature through several types of designated area. These include national parks, protected landscape areas known as “chráněná krajinná oblast” or “CHKO,” nature reserves, natural monuments, and European protected sites. Rules vary with the place and the level of protection. Visitors may encounter marked routes, restricted zones, seasonal limits, entry controls, or special rules for cycling, camping, fires, dogs, climbing, collecting, and organised events. Common outdoor activities include walking, hiking, cycling, nature observation, paddling, climbing, skiing, and mushroom picking. Access or common custom does not mean that every activity is allowed everywhere. Wild animals should be observed without chasing, feeding, touching, or disturbing them. Young animals may appear alone even when a parent is nearby, so interference can cause harm. Nature protection must balance habitat needs with farming, forestry, tourism, water management, transport, energy, and local livelihoods. Good decisions protect ecological connections while allowing appropriate and careful use.
