School in Cyprus

School in Cyprus is organized in stages that guide children from early education toward secondary completion. Pre-primary education supports early development, primary school builds core skills, and secondary education introduces broader subjects and later specialization. Public schools in the Republic of Cyprus mainly use Greek as the language of instruction. Turkish-language education serves the Turkish Cypriot community, while several private and international schools use English or another language. Public and private schools do not always follow the same curriculum. A private school may follow the Cypriot system, an international program, or the education system of another country. After primary education, pupils enter secondary education. General secondary routes emphasize a broad academic education, while technical and vocational routes connect school subjects with practical and occupational learning. Enrolment usually requires proof of the child’s identity, age, address, and previous schooling. Schools may also request health information and translated educational records so that the child can be placed appropriately. Children arriving from another country may need language support or an assessment of prior learning. Placement should consider both age and educational background rather than language ability alone. Schools assess progress through classroom work, assignments, tests, projects, and examinations. Parents normally receive information about attendance, achievement, behaviour, and any support needs. A school can provide learning, friendships, routine, and pathways to later education, but experiences differ. Families should ask about language help, special educational support, transport, school climate, and the recognition of leaving qualifications.
