Language in China

Language in China includes Standard Chinese, many regional Chinese varieties, and numerous languages used by ethnic communities. Pǔtōnghuà, based largely on northern Mandarin, is the national standard for education and broad communication. Written Chinese characters connect many readers in China, but spoken languages can differ greatly.

Tip

Learn basic Pǔtōnghuà for broad communication, but expect local speech and accents. Save important addresses and names in Chinese characters because pronunciation or English spelling may not be enough. If communication fails, use short sentences, writing, maps, or translation support without blaming the speaker.
