School in Canada

School education in Canada is mainly a provincial and territorial responsibility. Each jurisdiction sets its curriculum, grade structure, graduation rules, and general school policies. Public schools are usually administered locally by bodies called school boards, school districts, school divisions, or service centres. The name and responsibilities depend on the province or territory. Children generally begin with kindergarten or an early elementary stage and continue through elementary and secondary education. Some communities also use terms such as middle school, junior high school, senior high school, or combined school. Public schooling is funded for eligible residents, while private or independent schools operate under different arrangements. Home education is also possible under rules set by the relevant jurisdiction. English-language and French-language public education are important parts of the Canadian system. Depending on location and eligibility, families may also find French immersion, Indigenous-language learning, newcomer support, or other language programs. A school year is divided into reporting periods or terms. Students learn required subjects, complete classroom and practical work, receive feedback, and progress toward a secondary school diploma under local rules. Schools may provide support for disabilities, learning needs, language development, counselling, transportation, meals, and participation in school life. Available services and the process for receiving them differ between communities. Attendance boundaries often connect a home address to a particular public school. Special programs, separate school systems, or schools outside the local boundary may use additional application or eligibility rules. Families should contact the local school authority when enrolling a child. Commonly requested information includes identity, address, previous school records, language background, health information, and details needed to arrange support.
