Religion in Canada

Canada is religiously diverse, and many people also identify as non-religious. A label does not show how strongly someone believes, how often they practise, or which customs matter to them. Christian traditions have had a major historical influence on institutions and holidays. Christian communities themselves differ greatly in worship, organization, theology, language, and social views. Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and other religious communities contribute to Canadian public and cultural life. Immigration has expanded many communities, while some have much longer histories in Canada than newcomers may assume. First Nations, Inuit, and Métis spiritual traditions are distinct and connected to particular peoples, lands, teachings, and ceremonies. Colonial authorities often suppressed these traditions, but communities preserved and revitalized them. Freedom of conscience and religion is an important Canadian principle. People may practise a faith, change their beliefs, or follow no religion, while the rights and safety of others still matter. Public schools, workplaces, health services, and other institutions may address religious clothing, food, prayer, holidays, and time away through accommodation. The practical process depends on the institution and situation. Quebec has a particularly strong public tradition of secularism, shaped partly by its history with the Catholic Church. Debates about religion in public institutions can therefore differ from those elsewhere in Canada. Respectful coexistence does not require agreement about belief. It requires avoiding assumptions, allowing lawful practice, discussing needs clearly, and opposing hatred or harassment.
