Arrival in Canada

The arrival process in Canada depends on a person’s immigration status and destination. Requirements for visitors, students, workers, permanent residents, and returning residents are not identical. Keep passports, immigration papers, permits, and entry records secure. Check that names and other personal details are correct, and keep protected copies apart from the originals. A first address may be temporary. Before paying for accommodation, confirm the location, total cost, house rules, payment method, and whether the person offering it has authority to do so. Many essential systems are provincial or territorial rather than national. Health coverage, driver licensing, schools, tenancy rules, and several identification services therefore depend on where a person settles. A Social Insurance Number, commonly called a SIN, is used for employment and certain government programs. It is sensitive personal information and should be shared only when there is a valid reason. Banking, telephone service, internet access, and transport help turn arrival into a workable daily routine. Providers may ask for identification, an address, or a deposit, depending on the service and circumstances. Settlement organizations can help eligible newcomers understand documents, language learning, employment, housing, schools, and community services. Public libraries and community centres are also useful orientation points. Arrival takes time, and not every task must be completed immediately. Safety, lawful status, essential communication, shelter, food, medicine, and time-sensitive instructions come first.
