Dependent employment exists when a worker provides paid services under an employer’s direction and control. In Cameroon, access to work is strongly shaped by informality: EESI3 2021 recorded an employment rate of 50.8% among people aged 14 and above, a youth employment rate of 39.3% for ages 15 to 34, and salaried employment of 38.6%. Only about 6% of informal-sector workers were wage earners, and only 2.1% of informal jobs had written contracts; 50.2% had verbal contracts. Insurance coverage was recorded at 11%. The public sector accounted for 8.2% of employment and private formal employment for 5.1%.
Employment in Cameroon
Employment in Cameroon covers paid work under an employer’s direction. Most jobs are informal, while formal jobs include public and private employment. The FNE offers free placement services across all ten regions. Contracts, wages, working time, CNPS protection and termination rules govern formal employment.
Tip
Use the FNE as a free starting point when you want documented employment or help with placement and training. Before accepting work, secure clear terms on duration, pay, working time, social protection and termination, because informal work often leaves weaker proof and fewer protections. Keep your own records so you can check CNPS registration, wages and later claims.
