The public employment and vocational training institute (Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional) organises vocational training, among other channels, through the Centres for Employment and Vocational Training (Centros de Emprego e Formação Profissional). Public and private accredited providers, as well as technical schools, also offer courses; a valid provider licence (Alvará) is required for providers. Programmes follow the National Catalogue of Qualifications (Catálogo Nacional de Qualificações), the National Qualifications Framework (Quadro Nacional de Qualificações) and competence-oriented, modular curricula. Vocational training can lead to a vocational qualification certificate (Certificado de Qualificação Profissional) when all assigned modules are completed; individual modules allow a gradual entry and a modular certificate. Teaching combines theoretical and practical units and may include practical training in a real work context (prática em contexto real de trabalho) or an estágio placement. Duration, places, dates, admission requirements and fees depend on the course, qualification level, island and responsible CEFP; current IEFP programmes, for example, lasted from 6 to 14 months. Depending on the course, the provider may require a valid identity document, proof of schooling, a passport photo, a criminal record certificate or an entrance test. The monthly course fee (propina) is set by the IEFP for each course and published before the start; it is generally payable by the fifth working day, although reductions or exemptions may be possible in certain cases. Funding does not automatically apply to all participants. A certificate costs 1,000 CVE for the first issue and 1,300 CVE for the second issue; a declaration (declaração) costs 1,000 CVE. The certificate states, among other details, the qualification level, number of hours, occupational field and completed modules. Through Professional recognition, validation and certification of competences (RVCC Profissional), people aged 25 or over with at least five years of work experience can have demonstrated non-formal or informal competences certified against existing CNQ references. After completing vocational training, a company-based professional internship (estágio profissional empresarial) can support the transition into employment but does not create an automatic job offer. Foreign vocational qualifications are recognised through the CNEP recognition procedure (CNEP) and the UC-SNQ recognition procedure (UC-SNQ); an application through the KREMAIS portal (KREMAIS) may require the original certificate, information on hours and modules, education records and, where applicable, a certified translation.
Vocational training in Cabo Verde
Vocational training in Cabo Verde provides knowledge and practical skills for a specific occupation or occupational field. Available pathways include initial vocational training (Formação Profissional Inicial), modular qualifications, technical education and recognition of already acquired competences. A nationally uniform dual training pathway with a fixed apprentice wage is not identified; practical training may nevertheless include work experience or an internship (estágio).
Tip
Choose the education pathway in Cabo Verde according to your goal: a full vocational qualification is suitable if you need a recognised qualification for an occupational field, while individual modules allow a gradual entry. Check the programme, admission requirements, fees, certificate and practical components with the responsible CEFP before enrolling. Do not assume that participation is free or that a company will automatically hire you.
