Politics in Brunei

Politics in Brunei operates within a centralized monarchical constitutional order established by the Constitution of Brunei Darussalam of 1959. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah is head of state, head of government and the holder of the highest executive powers. Political participation mainly occurs through local selection procedures for district and village leadership rather than direct national elections.

State

Brunei has a centralized monarchical constitutional order based on the Constitution of Brunei Darussalam of 1959. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah combines the roles of head of state, head of government, and holder of the highest executive powers. State functions range from administration and public finance to adjudication, oversight, public information, and security.

Elections

Brunei currently has no documented direct national election process for the Sultan, Prime Minister, Cabinet, or the Legislative Council (LegCo). Political participation takes place mainly through local selection procedures for district heads (Penghulu Mukim) and village heads (Ketua Kampung). These PMKK votes produce a recommendation for local leadership positions, which becomes effective only after further review and the Sultan’s approval.
