Life stages

Life stages structure important transitions in life.

History

The history of Brunei covers early regional contacts, the rise of the Islamic sultanate, territorial change, British protection, Japanese occupation, oil-based development and independence in 1984. Evidence includes Chinese records, Malay manuscripts, genealogies, oral histories, archaeology, treaties, administrative records and constitutional documents. Early references to names such as P'o-li, Poli, Puni and Boni remain debated and do not automatically identify Brunei.

Art

Art in Brunei includes visual art, music, literature, film, performing arts, architecture, design, photography and digital forms. The scene is fragmented and connects government bodies, museums, the Language and Literature Bureau, universities and private collectives. Access, permits, training and rights depend heavily on the discipline and the specific event.

religion

Islam is the official religion in Brunei and shapes the state, public holidays, education, halal rules, and parts of family and criminal law. According to the Constitution, other religions may be practiced in peace and harmony. In 2021, 82.1 percent of the population was Muslim, 6.7 percent Christian, and 6.3 percent Buddhist.

Language

Malay is Brunei’s official language and shapes the state, ceremonies, and national identity. English is widespread in education, administration, business, science, and the media, but there is no documented equal status as a second official language. Chinese, Indigenous Borneo, and other community languages complement this bilingual language landscape.

Traditions

Brunei’s traditions include inherited practices connected with family life, annual celebrations, clothing, music, crafts and local communities. Malay cultural roots, Islam and Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB), the state philosophy, shape public culture, while the seven puak preserve distinct expressions. Families, communities, schools and cultural institutions transmit these practices, with everyday transmission remaining mainly informal.

Coexistence

Everyday coexistence in Brunei combines state law with local practices in the kampung, meaning village or settlement, and the mukim, an administrative subdivision. Residents handle many neighbourhood concerns through the Ketua Kampung, the Penghulu Mukim and local consultative councils, while JAPEM and national helplines support serious social, family and child-welfare problems. Public conduct, digital communication and access to shared spaces also follow specific legal and administrative rules.
