Living in Benin

Benin is located in West Africa on the Gulf of Guinea and has around 11.5 million people. In the south, coastal plains, lagoons, and a hot, humid tropical climate shape the country; toward the north, the landscape becomes drier and is dominated by savannas. Rainy and dry seasons influence agriculture, roads, and daily routines. Many people live in cities such as Cotonou, in densely built-up neighborhoods, while smaller houses and villages predominate in rural areas. Motorcycle taxis are an important means of transport, especially in the south; outside the cities, distances and road conditions are often decisive. People work, among other sectors, in trade, agriculture, crafts, and services. Markets, family visits, and eating together are part of everyday life in many places, which differs considerably depending on the region.
