Language in Benin

French is the only constitutional official language in Benin and shapes government documents, administration, education and diplomacy. People also use many national languages, such as Fon, Adja, Yoruba, Bariba/Batonum, Dendi, Fulfulde and Ditamari, often as multilingual speakers. Local languages facilitate access to oral information, education, culture and civic participation, but do not generally replace French in official written communication. Available languages depend on the region, institution and programme.
