Art in Benin

Visual arts (arts visuels) in Benin include painting, sculpture, installation, ceramics, textiles, photography, video, and immersive and three-dimensional works. The Fondation Zinsou operates a museum in Ouidah and a LAB in Cotonou, presents contemporary art and offers residencies selected on the basis of an application dossier, workspace, time, support and, in some cases, materials. Admission to the LAB is free; at the museum in Ouidah, children enter free and adults pay an amount of their choice, with about 3,000 FCFA recommended. Opening hours and current conditions should be checked before visiting. Music and the performing arts include concerts, live music, singing, drumming, theatre, dance, mask performances, and oral and lyrical performances. The Gèlèdè tradition combines carved masks, costumes, dance, singing and an ensemble of female and male singers and drummers; it belongs to Yoruba-Nago culture in Benin, Nigeria and Togo and was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2008. Vodun and community performances require context-sensitive treatment so that religious meaning, local knowledge and the rights of participating communities are not lost through mere folklorization. The book chain covers writing, publication, distribution, libraries and access to books. The National Library of Benin (Bibliothèque nationale du Bénin) is responsible, among other things, for legal deposit (dépôt légal), cataloguing, access and digitization. Listed fees are 5,000 FCFA for an ISBN, 10,000 FCFA for an ISSN and 2,500 FCFA for legal deposit; four copies are required for an ISBN title and two copies for a periodical. Publisher accreditation through the competent cultural administration is listed at 10,000 FCFA, with a three-month period, RCCM, IFU and three publishing contracts. These service details may change. For film productions, the CNCIA issues a filming certificate. The procedure is listed at 20,000 FCFA with a stated period of 72 hours; requirements include a French-language treatment or synopsis, information on equipment, team, filming locations, dates and duration, and later a copy of the post-production for the CNCIA. A performance production authorization (Autorisation de production de spectacle) may be required for public performances. The listed authorization has a three-year period and costs 10,000 FCFA; requirements include an application, a licence as a cultural event organizer, artist contracts with remuneration and benefits, a repertoire, BUBEDRA quitus, proof of security and emergency arrangements, confirmation of the venue and insurance. Architecture in Benin concerns both artistic design and the protection of the built heritage. The Direction du Patrimoine Culturel works on inventorying, protection and classification; traditional earthen architecture and craft knowledge are documented, for example, at Tata Somba, Koutammakou and in the earthen construction techniques of Abomey. Following a call for applications or cohort-based admission, CFPA Abomey offers training of approximately five months with more than 100 learners, including masonry, woodworking, electrical work, roofing, wood carving and bas-relief. Design is represented as a formal training pathway, among other places, at Africa Design School in Cotonou. Its programmes include Design Numérique, Design Graphique, Design d’Espace and Design d’Objet; a three-year bachelor’s pathway and a two-year master’s pathway are listed. The application fee is 20,000 FCFA, while current tuition fees are not published on the main page. The training is conducted in French. Digital art is documented as an emerging practice and may combine projection, immersive sound, 3D animation, shadow theatre and augmented reality (réalité augmentée). No separate national degree programme or special state service for digital art is documented; depending on the project, support and submission routes may run through visual arts or screen industries. Copyright, contracts and, where applicable, filming or performance authorizations also apply to digital productions. The ADAC supports several fields. The Fund for the Development of Arts and Culture (FDAC) was created by Decree No. 2022-575; in the first documented call for applications, projects could receive up to 30,000,000 FCFA, with the ADAC contributing no more than 70 percent and the applicant at least 30 percent. In 2025, 42 projects from 763 applications were reported; selection is competitive and does not create an automatic entitlement. Funding programmes for museums and infrastructure include, among other things, contemporary art, Vodun, royal collections and the memory of Ouidah, while the specific operating status may differ by location. Training and public education are offered, among other places, by EPA in Porto-Novo in conservation, mediation, museums, archives, and tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The professional bachelor's degree in Cultural Heritage Management (Licence professionnelle Gestion du Patrimoine Culturel) has existed since 2018/2019; admission is listed as requiring a Baccalauréat, with or without professional experience. Fees and exact schedules are not published, and additional courses, workshops and residencies depend on the relevant programme. Decree No. 2011-322 distinguishes professional, semi-professional and amateur artists; access to artistic activity is generally free under the decree. Registration with the Artist's House (Maison de l’Artiste) may require a form, proof of identity and evidence of artistic practice. The current amount listed for an artist card is 5,000 FCFA, while an older service entry lists 3,000 FCFA; the responsible service should confirm the current amount. An artistic agency requires a ministerial licence, which according to the service information is renewed every two years. Copyright protects economic and moral rights from the creation of a work. BUBEDRA performs tasks for authors, performing artists, phonogram producers and broadcasters. In an employment relationship, work in the arts is treated as an employment contract; written contracts, amendments, income and reimbursement of expenses should therefore be documented in a traceable way. Minors are subject to additional requirements, in particular the consent of the legal guardian or authorization from the labour inspectorate. Cultural heritage law requires inventorying at national, departmental, communal or community level and regulates the protection, export and return of cultural property. For social protection, registration with the Artist's House, annual artistic income of at least twelve times the SMIG and payment of tax in Benin may play a role; a reform announced for 2026 may change these conditions.
