Religion in Belize

Belize has no state-established church. Larger religious communities include Roman Catholic, Pentecostal, Anglican, Adventist, Mennonite, Baptist, Methodist, and Nazarene congregations, as well as Jehovah’s Witnesses. Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Baháʼí, and Rastafarian communities also exist. Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean spiritual practices are not reported separately in the listed census categories. The 2022 census recorded 31.8% Roman Catholic, 9.2% Pentecostal, 4.7% Adventist, 4.0% Anglican, 3.9% Mennonite, and 3.5% Baptist affiliations. A further 31.0% reported no religious affiliation. Roman Catholic affiliation is especially widespread in Orange Walk and Corozal, while people with no religious affiliation account for larger shares in Stann Creek and Cayo. Pentecostal congregations are comparatively strong in Cayo and Toledo, Mennonites in Orange Walk and Corozal, Adventists in Corozal, and Baptists in Toledo. The Constitution of Belize protects the freedom to have a religion, change religion, or profess no religion. Individuals and communities may practise religion publicly or privately through worship, teaching, practice, and observance of religious holidays. Restrictions may arise from public safety, order, morals, health, and the rights of others. No one may be compelled to take an oath that conflicts with their religion or belief. Religious affiliation is also among the legally relevant characteristics protected against unjustified dismissal. Access to religious services usually runs through a local congregation or religious leader. Worship services, prayers, instruction, sacraments, initiations, and other rites follow the rules of the relevant community; no general state authorization for ordinary worship services has been documented. Donations, course fees, ceremony costs, and payments for clergy or premises vary by congregation. There is no uniform nationwide process for religious membership. The statutory religious holidays include Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Monday, and Christmas. Being classified as a statutory or bank holiday does not automatically require religious participation. Under labour law (Labour Act), work on holidays is subject to special compensation rules: Christmas, Good Friday, and Easter Monday generally carry double the overtime rate, while other public holidays generally carry 1.5 times the rate; exceptions and specific employment arrangements must be checked. Religious communities may establish and operate schools. A denominational school belongs to or is administered by a religious community; state and state-supported schools receive public funding. Attendance at state and state-supported primary and secondary schools is generally free, although approved special fees may apply. Compulsory schooling applies to children aged 5 to 14. Religious instruction and joint worship are permitted, but parents may object in writing. No one may be forced to attend instruction or ceremonies of a religion other than their own. For interfaith exchange, the ministry responsible for constitutional and religious affairs (Ministry of Constitution and Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs and Transportation), together with the office responsible for constitutional and religious affairs (Office of Constitutional and Religious Affairs), is responsible. Its policy tasks include interfaith dialogue, cooperation, tolerance education, and protection of religious freedom. For the 2026/27 financial year, a recurring budget line of 309,521 Belize dollars is listed for this purpose; no uniform nationwide complaint or mediation procedure for all religious communities has been documented. Religious life events such as baptism, naming, confirmation, communion, conversion, initiation, funeral services, and burial are organized by the relevant congregation. A religious wedding alone does not establish a legal marriage. The requirements of the marriage statute (Marriage Act), an authorized marriage officer (Marriage Officer), and civil registration are needed. For the marriage licence, copies of identification documents certified by a justice of the peace (Justice of the Peace) are required; the application is submitted signed and stamped, and payment is made after preliminary approval. The fee is 50 Belize dollars when at least one applicant is a Belizean national (Belizean), and 200 Belize dollars when neither applicant is a Belize citizen. Dates, notices, ceremony costs, and the availability of an authorized marriage official depend on the individual case and the relevant community.
