Politics in Belize

Politics in Belize combines public institutions, constitutional rules and elections. Belize is a sovereign democratic constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary Westminster system. The Constitution establishes the framework for government, courts, rights and public authority, while elections determine representation in the House of Representatives.

State

Belize is a sovereign democratic constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary Westminster system. The Belize Constitution is the supreme law and sets the framework for government, the National Assembly, the courts, constitutional rights and public authority. State services operate through national institutions and local government: six administrative districts, two cities, seven towns and village councils. Ministries, oversight bodies, the police, the Belize Defence Force and NEMO cover administration, public finance, accountability and security.

Elections

Belize elects the 31 members of its House of Representatives through a first-past-the-post system in 31 electoral divisions. Eligible voters cast one ballot for one candidate, and the candidate with the most votes wins the division. Registration, polling, counting and election administration are handled by the Elections and Boundaries Commission and Department.
