The national statistical agency (Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB)) tracks price developments using the consumer price index (Consumer Price Index). Its basket contains 395 items; the 2025/26 household survey (Household Budget Survey 2025/26) covers 3,036 households in urban and rural areas, including the cayes. These data show averages but do not replace individual household planning. The budget depends, among other things, on household size, age, housing type, district, island, import share and season. The housing component of the index, covering housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, rose by 0.8 percent in January 2026, driven by higher rents. No reliable nationwide official rent-cost table is available. Electricity tariffs differ between the social tariff (Social Rate) and the residential tariff (Residential Rate). Under the tariff plan of the electricity utility (BEL) and electricity regulator (PUC) for January 1 to June 30, 2026, the social tariff cost BZ$0.22 per kWh for 0 to 60 kWh, with a minimum charge of BZ$5. Under the residential tariff, 0 to 50 kWh cost BZ$0.34, 51 to 200 kWh cost BZ$0.42, and more than 200 kWh cost BZ$0.46 per kWh; the minimum charge was BZ$10. A new connection cost BZ$200, moving in, activation or transfer cost BZ$40, and reconnection cost BZ$15. An additional charge (COPA) may also apply. The water bill depends on the area and on whether it covers water only or also wastewater. The amounts proposed in the water utility (BWS) five-year plan for 2026 to 2031 are not automatically applicable tariffs: for 0 to 1,000 gallons, BZ$10.01 was proposed on the mainland for water only, BZ$12.01 for water and wastewater in Belize City or Belmopan, BZ$26.86 in San Pedro, and BZ$24.75 on Caye Caulker. The proposed social tariff for 0 to 600 gallons was BZ$9.01, BZ$10.81, BZ$24.17 or BZ$22.28 depending on the area. The household should check the applicable amount with the provider before signing a contract. SIB average values from July 2026 were BZ$8.49 per pound of ground beef, BZ$3.40 per pound of whole chicken, BZ$4.31 per litre of fresh milk and BZ$1.26 per pound of sugar. These figures provide a nationwide reference and do not guarantee a shop price. Average mobility prices were BZ$13.77 per gallon of regular gasoline and BZ$14.32 per gallon of diesel. The sources reviewed did not provide a nationwide official fare schedule for buses or taxis. Depending on the route, provider, vehicle, mainland or island location, fuel, maintenance, insurance, ferry or air travel may add to the cost. Healthcare costs also change: the SIB health price index rose by 4.3 percent in January 2026, doctor visits by 11.0 percent, medicines and medical supplies by 6.5 percent, and surgical fees by 5.9 percent. No general nationwide fee matrix is available. The social insurance institution (Social Security Board) covers medical care only in cases of a recognized workplace accident or occupational disease and only at a public facility or an approved private provider. For other treatment, the household must check the specific costs and its coverage. Government and government-supported primary and secondary schools charge no tuition for citizens and permanent residents. Compulsory school age ranges from 5 to 14 years. Uniforms, meals, transport, devices and other school-related expenses may still arise. Special fees require approval from the chief education official (Chief Education Officer) or the responsible minister. Private schools, higher-education institutions and other tertiary providers set their fees themselves or according to institutional rules. At named schools, the education support program (Education Upliftment Project) covers tuition and fees and, depending on the offering, meals, uniforms, transport and learning materials. Benefits from the Board can reduce costs but do not mean general cost-free access. The maternity benefit (Maternity Allowance) equals 80 percent of average insurable earnings for up to 14 weeks, with a minimum of BZ$44 and a maximum of BZ$384 per week. The sickness benefit (Sickness Benefit) equals 80 percent for up to 156 days and then 60 percent for up to a further 78 days. Contribution periods, eligibility requirements and deadlines must be checked in each case. For communication, prepaid packages from mobile provider (Digi) include, for example, BZ$1 for 130 MB and six hours, BZ$5 for 680 MB and three days, or BZ$35 for 5,500 MB and 30 days. Another mobile provider (Smart) offers, among other options, BZ$1.25 for 165 MB and 24 hours and BZ$40 for 7,200 MB and 30 days. The fixed-line provider (DigiNet) charges private customers BZ$84.38 including GST for installation; depending on the tariff, a deposit of BZ$50 to BZ$100 may be added. Network coverage and availability vary locally. Leisure costs also depend on location. According to the fee list of the heritage authority (NICH) dated November 1, 2024, archaeological reserves such as Caracol, Barton Creek and Nohoc Che'en cost BZ$15; Altun Ha, Cahal Pech, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Nim Li Punit and Xunantunich cost BZ$10; and Cerro Maya, El Pilar, Santa Rita and Serpon cost BZ$5. Residents have free admission on Sundays and public holidays; cave sites are excluded. According to the fee notice, children up to and including age 11 pay no admission. Bank products, debt and taxes are not included in this cost overview.
Living Costs in Belize
Living costs in Belize consist of housing, utilities, food, mobility, healthcare, education, communication, family and leisure. There is no uniform nationwide minimum-budget or rent-cost flat rate; amounts vary greatly between urban and rural areas, districts, the mainland, and San Pedro and Caye Caulker. The Belize dollar (BZ$) has a fixed exchange rate of BZ$2 to US$1. A realistic budget therefore depends on household size, housing type, consumption, school type, health coverage, travel route and one-time deposits or connection costs.
Tip
Plan your budget for Belize based on your specific location and household, not on a nationwide flat amount. Separate recurring expenses from deposits, connections, devices, ferries or flights, and do not treat social benefits as guaranteed general cost coverage.
