Study in Belize

Belize has a fragmented tertiary education system with public, private and regional providers. The University of Belize offers Associate, Bachelor and Master degrees at campuses in Belmopan, Belize City, Central Farm and Punta Gorda. Galen University provides private Bachelor and Master programmes, while UWI Global Campus Belize offers regional online and blended study. Junior colleges commonly provide Associate-degree pathways that may lead to further university study. Applicants usually need a recognised secondary-school diploma or an equivalent qualification. The University of Belize generally requires a recognised four-year high-school transcript and a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, together with either ATLIB qualifications, four CXC passes including English and Mathematics, an SAT score of at least 890 or an ACT score of at least 18. The university may also require two recommendation forms, programme-specific documents or a placement examination. Transfer from a Ministry-recognised junior college is possible, but the receiving institution must confirm which credits it accepts. Applications to the University of Belize can be submitted online or on paper. The university typically responds to an application within 15 business days and requires a BZD 175 commitment deposit from local applicants, with the same amount in US dollars for international applicants. Galen University uses rolling admissions, but complete documents should normally arrive at least four weeks before the semester begins. Its main intakes are Fall in September, Spring in January and Summer in May. Study duration varies by qualification. An Associate degree commonly takes about two years, a Bachelor degree about four years and a Master degree about two years. A course commonly carries three credits and meets for at least 150 minutes per week over 15 weeks. Institutions set their own rules for attendance, credits, academic progress, fees, conduct and academic integrity. Belize has no general national tertiary examination system, although regulated professions may require additional licensing examinations; nursing certification can involve a regional examination. Tertiary study is not generally tuition-free by state entitlement. Fees depend on the programme and semester. Galen University lists a BZD 300 registration fee per semester and tuition of BZD 320 per credit in its published fee information, with a 10 percent discount for payment within the first two weeks; current amounts should be confirmed before enrolment. The University of Belize offers financial aid, scholarships, loans, payment plans and work-study. Black Jaguar Aid generally requires Belizean citizenship or permanent residence, a minimum GPA of 2.75 and full-time enrolment of at least 12 credits, with possible service obligations. Work-study can involve up to 20 hours per week. Scholarship eligibility, deadlines and service conditions depend on the specific award. The National Accreditation Council of Belize, or NACB, registers local and foreign institutions, maintains accreditation functions, validates new programmes, evaluates foreign awards and handles equivalency matters. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology and its Tertiary and Post-Secondary Education Services Unit also have regulatory responsibilities. The current public tertiary directory and licensing registry were not fully available in the research record, so students should confirm an institution's registration, programme status, accreditation or recognition directly with the NACB and the institution before paying fees. Foreign applicants may additionally need proof of English ability, evidence of sufficient funds and an immigration or student-permit review. After graduation, an institution may issue a certificate, diploma, Associate, Bachelor or Master qualification, but regulated employment and overseas study can require separate professional licensing or recognition of the award.
