Art in Belize

The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) and its Institute of Creative Arts (ICA) support training, galleries, performances, exhibitions, awards, publications and cultural structures in Belize’s districts. Public access also includes the Museum of Belize and local cultural centres (Houses of Culture). The Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts, the Museum of Belizean Art, and festivals and exhibitions such as the National Festival of Art Exhibit complement these offerings. Belize City is particularly important for central institutions, while access in the districts depends more heavily on Houses of Culture, community groups and individual events. Artistic practice includes painting, sculpture, photography, crafts, quilt and textile work, installations, music, literature, film, animation, videography, dance, theatre, architecture, interior, graphic and fashion design, jewellery, toys and digital art. In music, live, recording and community pathways exist alongside educational and archival projects, for example through the Belize Music Project, the Big Choon Forum and the Belize National Orchestra. Dance and theatre are supported, among others, by Modern Dance Movement, the Belize National Dance Company, the Bliss Centre and productions involving costume design, set design, music, screenwriting and acting. Literature is created in English, Kriol, Spanish, Garifuna and Maya-language practice; the University of Belize offers English-language study pathways involving literature, writing and Creative Writing. Formal art qualifications are not documented nationwide for all disciplines. The University of Belize offers an associate degree and a bachelor’s degree in English; a published cost estimate for the bachelor’s degree was US$8,667 for Belizean nationals in 2025, but changes are possible. Non-formal pathways exist through workshops, youth and summer programmes, exhibitions, performances and apprenticeships offered by ICA, Houses of Culture and other institutions. Many artists also work in community groups, private studios and galleries, through festivals, live practice or self-organized projects. A general art admission requirement or mandatory registration is not documented. The artist registry (Artist Registry) records, among other things, discipline, skills, years of practice, a website or social media and formal training. Public release of the information is handled separately; a registration fee has not been verified. The cultural grant fund (Belize Culture Fund) supports Belizean individuals and non-governmental and nonprofit organizations in visual art, music, dance, drama, literature and audiovisual arts. According to the 2024 guidelines, each funding cycle provided for four projects of up to US$5,000 and five projects of up to US$2,000; the number of applications, deadlines and eligibility requirements must be checked in the relevant call. Proposals from rural areas are expressly encouraged. The intellectual property office (Belize Intellectual Property Office) is responsible for copyright. Protection of a work generally arises upon its creation, without registration being a requirement; a voluntary deposit costs US$50. Literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works are generally protected for the author’s lifetime plus 50 years, while sound recordings, films, broadcasts and cable programmes are protected for 50 years. Authors are generally the first rights holders; for commissioned works, a written agreement may provide otherwise. Moral rights and performance, reproduction, broadcasting and licensing rights should be reviewed contractually. There is no central national art market or reliable market statistics. Sales and publicity often take place locally, in connection with events or projects, through galleries, studios, festivals and direct contacts. Opening hours and prices apply to the specific institution; public opening hours from 8 to 17 are stated for NICH institutions, while a museum ticket may cost approximately US$7 to US$14 depending on the offering. Art offerings can be distinguished from leisure, media or history topics: voluntary participation, mere media use or historical representation belong here only when artistic practice, the work, its presentation or its preservation is the main subject.
