Which organisation supports apprenticeship development within vocational education in Belize?

Employment Training and Education Services (ETES) has an apprenticeship function, including support connected with training and certification. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Labour, the Chamber and SAGE have also been involved in developing or testing apprenticeship models.

Are apprentices in Belize guaranteed a wage, fixed duration and uniform contract?

No reliable nationwide rule was established for a common apprenticeship wage, minimum duration, contract or set of apprentice rights. These conditions need to be confirmed for the particular programme and workplace.

Which occupations does Belize’s developing National Apprenticeship Program currently emphasise?

The 2024–2025 education report identifies livestock rearing and construction as current areas of focus. This does not establish that every provider offers an apprenticeship in either occupation.

Apprenticeship in Belize

Apprenticeships in Belize combine practical learning in a workplace with occupational training, but the national system remains fragmented and under development. The Education and Training Act 2010 covers apprenticeships in designated trades, which may lead to a Belize National Vocational Qualification. Current development efforts focus particularly on livestock rearing and construction.

Belize does not yet have a documented nationwide dual apprenticeship system with one standard contract, fixed minimum duration, guaranteed pay or uniform apprentice rights. Employment Training and Education Services (ETES) has an apprenticeship function, while the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Labour, the Chamber and SAGE have been involved in pilot work or model development. The 2024–2025 education report describes the National Apprenticeship Program as still being developed. The legal framework allows apprenticeships in designated trades and provides a possible pathway toward a Belize National Vocational Qualification (BzNVQ). Whether a specific apprenticeship offers assessment, certification, payment, working-time rules or social protection depends on the programme, institution and workplace arrangement. No reliable nationwide rule establishes the same conditions for every apprentice. A workplace apprenticeship can complement formal Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) at an Institute for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, but these are not automatically the same pathway. Technical and vocational institutes and other providers offer structured programmes in fields such as construction, automotive work, electrical installation, refrigeration and air conditioning, welding, carpentry, agriculture, food preparation and information technology. An apprenticeship may suit someone when supervised workplace practice is available, while an institute or short course may provide a clearer structured option when no recognised apprenticeship place exists. Before accepting an apprenticeship in Belize, clarify the occupation, workplace supervisor, training content, duration, assessment method, possible BzNVQ or other certificate, payment and arrangements for disputes or early termination. Treat claims about national recognition, guaranteed wages or automatic certification cautiously unless the responsible organisation confirms them in writing.
